Our pharmacists can now assess and prescribe for 19 common minor ailments. Conveniently accessing health care close to home in a timely manner is easier than ever. The information below will provide what you need to know about how our pharmacists can help you manage minor ailments.
What are Minor Ailments?
Minor ailments are typically short-term and uncomplicated health conditions that can be resolved with minimal treatment. These ailments are identified by ruling out signs or symptoms that might suggest a more serious condition and carry a very low risk of masking a condition that requires further investigation.
What are the 19 minor ailments Ontario pharmacists can assess?
- Allergic Rhinitis (Stuffy or runny nose)
- Canker Sores
- Cold Sores
- Heartburn
- Hemorrhoids
- Sprains and Strains
- Infections
- Eye Infections (Bacterial, viral, or allergic)
- Oral Fungal Infections (Thrush)
- Pinworms and Threadworms
- Tick Bites – Prevention of Lyme Disease
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Skin Conditions

How can our pharmacists help with these minor health conditions?
Our pharmacists can provide a consultation either in person, in a private setting, or by phone. During the consultation our pharmacists will conduct a detailed assessment to carefully review your symptoms, medical history, allergies, and other relevant factors to select the most appropriate treatment options for you.
The consultation may result in the pharmacist prescribing medication(s), if appropriate, providing an over-the-counter medication, or other non-medication self-care recommendations.
The pharmacist may also direct you to the appropriate healthcare provider if the assessment indicates that your condition could be more serious in nature.
What happens after my minor ailment consultation?
Our pharmacist will work with you to determine the appropriate timeline to schedule a follow-up discussion to ensure that the recommended treatment is effective. The pharmacist will also notify your primary healthcare provider of the assessment and the treatment plan, if applicable.
Is there a cost for this service?
The minor ailment consultation service is funded by the provincial government. For holders of an Ontario health card (OHIP), there is no cost for the consultation. The cost of any medication(s) will be billed to an existing drug benefits plan or must be paid for directly out of pocket.
